This is a different kind of gym. We embrace the struggle, the challenge, and the hard work. We yell, we sweat, and we cheer each other on. We train hard every day, using the whole body in sync, as it is meant to be used. Your body was not designed to isolate muscles or even muscle groups. It doesn’t matter if you are throwing a fastball, carrying a victim from a fire or placing a box on a high shelf, everyday actions require your muscles to move in sync with one another. These multi joint movements create functional, athletic fitness for daily life.

May 2, 2012: Good Bye to Britt at the Vig tomorrow night
Brittany is graduating college and going home to Alaska this weekend. We will be meeting at the Vig tomorrow night (Thursday) at 7pm to send her off. She started as an athlete, spent time with us as an intern, and has been a great assistant trainer for the last few months. We will miss Brittany’s work ethic, enthusiasm, attention to form, and beautiful smile!
If you have a few minutes tomorrow evening, stop by the Vig and say goodbye.
May 2, 2012: Clock whore month
Hey everyone,
There are a lot of named and Hero WODS stacked up this month, so (as you probably noticed today) we are going to force people to take a little more accountability for their workouts. Intensity is going to take priority.

April 30, 2012: Hull Family Open House Saturday
As you all probably know, we were able to buy a big old Victorian house on the southside in February. It needs a lot of work, but it is pretty cool. Since the gym is our only income, you all helped us buy our dream house! We’d like to have you all over to see it.
This picture is from several years ago, with one of the previous owners. The yard has been sadly neglected for a few years now.
On Saturday beginning at 6pm we will have a very casual open house for those of you that want to come hang out. We are mostly moved in and settled, but there are decades of work to be done.
If you would like to come over, here are the details:
Time: Saturday, May 5th beginning at 6pm
Where: 208 S. 35th St. Big huge brick house, you can’t miss it. There is another huge brick house across the street, ours is the pointy one with the unfinished paint job.
If you would like to bring some food to share, please feel free, but you certainly don’t have to. We’ll have some munchies. Bring the family, Gwen is excited to show everyone her pink room and swing set!
April 30, 2012: Oly Meet results
We had a great meet on Saturday, with 13 lifters. Here is a pic of the scoreboard. Just for fun, I’ve included a list of the lifters and their total percent of bodyweight lifted. (I only did percentages for those who scored in both lifts) This is not the official percentage of bodyweight scoring that they do in sanctioned meets with the formula taking into account the greater effect of gravity on larger lifters – just a simple percentage of bodyweight.
We’ll have the video out in a couple of days.
Thanks to all our lifters and all our volunteers, we had a great day!
Name Percentage of Bodyweight Lifted (total)
Casey Elder 147.8%
Nichole Scala 149.3%
Holly Skillen 153%
Terri Murphy 156.9%
Jill Trabing 165.4%
Leslie Allen 166%
Tyler Murray 183.7%
Meriah McLeish 216.7%
John Grosulak 222.3%
Jared Tutt 224.2%
KD Winters 242.7% (she’s only about 5’ 3”, and weighed in at 114lbs!)

He is survived by his mother Jo Ann, father Spencer, and sister Carol Bongfeldt.
20 min AMRAP
April 29, 2012: Sunday – At Home WOD: Upside down time
Accumulate 10 minutes upside down!
Use any combination of the following to get your 10 minutes:
Practice Hand walking, hand stands, hand stand push ups against a wall, kicking up to a handstand against a wall and holding for as long as you can, or just getting into a head stand. Even modified hand stand push ups with your knees up on a chair or the couch will do. Just get upside down. Be careful, make sure you won’t kick anything when you kick up, and don’t hurt your neck.
