This is a different kind of gym. We embrace the struggle, the challenge, and the hard work. We yell, we sweat, and we cheer each other on. We train hard every day, using the whole body in sync, as it is meant to be used. Your body was not designed to isolate muscles or even muscle groups. It doesn’t matter if you are throwing a fastball, carrying a victim from a fire or placing a box on a high shelf, everyday actions require your muscles to move in sync with one another. These multi joint movements create functional, athletic fitness for daily life.

April 25, 2012: Lifting Meet this Saturday

We will be hosting our Spring Oly Lifting Meet this Saturday (details here).  We encourage anyone who is interested to come down and cheer the lifters on.  First lift will be at noon.

We could also use a few more volunteers to help the meet run smoothly.  If you would like to volunteer, post a comment below.  Volunteers need to be at the gym at about 11:45, and we are generally done by 4 or so depending on the number of lifters.  You don’t need any lifting experience to volunteer, we will show you exactly what we need you to do.  Mostly it’s just keeping everyone organized, and keeping scores.

Since we have the meet on Saturday, there will be no WOD.

April 24, 2012: What we do on the weekend…

The Hull Family did some experimenting this weekend.  I (Katie) tried something new in my quest to find an easy to make Paleo “chip.”  I had several tomatoes from my Bountiful Basket, and since none of us love tomatoes, I sliced them up and put them in the dehydrator.  Turns out none of us like them dried, either, but several people who sampled them on Monday liked them.  The ones on the left have some greek seasoning on them, the ones on the right are plain. They might be fun if I packed them in small jars with olive oil, and gave them as gifts.   I’m thinking tonight I will try drying some zucchini slices with sea salt.

Meanwhile, Clint was working on his “window garden.”  It’s an Idea he found in a lecture on TedX.  It’s a tiny hydroponic garden in your window!  The first few tries required a lot of towels and a mop, but he finally got it all dialed in and working.  The water is black because of liquid seaweed added to “cycle” the water – not sure exactly what that means, but apparently it’s necessary.  The first pic is the garden running, the second pic is seeds starting to sprout in the “grow medium.”  In a couple weeks if all goes well, we will add fish to the tank at the bottom, and they will provide the nutrients for the plants.

Did anyone else do something interesting and new this weekend?  We’d love to hear about it!

  • April 23, 2012: Half a Beef Raffle for Gene Hiem

    Dear friends,

What if you were living on borrowed time?
Gene Hiem is fighting for his live. In 2011, a routine doctor’s appointment led to the shocking diagnosis of Hepatitis C. Doctors suspect it may be the result of time spent in the military in the 70’s. After further testing, Gene received the equally-devastating news that he also has liver cancer. Doctors say a liver transplant is critical to his survival, and he was added to the waiting list in February.
As Gene awaits a transplant he must undergo Chemotherapy and treatments for the Hepatitis, which take a toll on him. It’s difficult to keep up at his job as a crane operator and unfortunately Gene’s hope for new life come at a very high price. The average price of a liver transplant is $575,000.00, but that does not include any of the endless lists of expenses that accompany this surgery. Because the hospital is 900 miles away, Gene and Linda incur substantial expenses when they travel for appointments, and they may have to temporarily relocate to Minnesota.
It is difficult to ask for help and Gene is the kind of man who would give the shirt off his back to help someone in need, but right now he needs the help of others.
    • To help fund the cost of the transplant there will be silent auction held at the VIG restaurant in Billings Heights on Saturday May 19th 2012, 12pm till 3pm. There will also be a drawing for a half a beef, tickets are $20.00.
    • The tickets for the half a beef will be for sale at Alternative Athletics until the week of the silent auction. You do not have to be at the VIG to win, you will be called if you ticket is drawn. The beef is from a local butcher, and you will have your choice of cuts for the half beef.
*half a beef is a LOT, if people would like to participate in the drawing, I am suggesting that people go in together on the tickets and split the beef if they win.
*if anybody has items they would like to donate for the silent auction or has any questions about the raffle please contact me at 406-860-9862, I will be more than happy to collect them and take then to the auction (We would like to have the silent auction items at least a week before the event).
Thanks so much to everyone for even considering helping Gene, his wife is a good friend of mine and I am reaching out to try and help them in any way I can.
    Sincerely,

    Maddie Miller
